As a highly experienced and stable team that managed clients’ money and emotion amid the volatility of 2000, 2008 and 2020, we are proud that virtually all of those clients remain with us today. We believe that’s due in large part to our enlightened perspective on mitigating investment risk and helping clients follow the strategy we’ve mutually agreed upon.
Experience tells us to be “goals-based” advisors, which means we do not guide clients with our eyes on arbitrary industry benchmarks. Instead, we take the time to look closely at clients and see them as people, rather than portfolios. We want to know what’s on a client’s mind and what’s in their heart. What are they passionate about? What are their greatest fears and most cherished goals?
By visiting clients in their homes, sitting at their kitchen tables, and engaging with spouses and entire families, we help them explore and identify, and prioritize their objectives – giving us the insights we need to structure a customized strategy that often spans investment and liability management, legacy planning and tax minimization and estate planning strategies.
There are no shortcuts to what we do. In fact, we typically have three or four meetings with clients before ever introducing an account document or financial strategy. Why? Because we want to be sure that a client is as comfortable with us as we are in developing a plan that reflects their real-world goals and concerns.
Each of us believes the value of an advisory team extends well beyond “dollars and cents.” It’s best measured over time, by the delivery of highly professional and purposed wealth management – offered with a personal touch. We are fully invested in supporting our clients and welcome the opportunity to serve you, as well.
At The Lister McDonald Wealth Management Group, we believe that a financial advisory team is best evaluated by the loyalty and longevity of its clients, as well as the outcomes they enjoy. Our clientele spans life stages, experiences and the wealth continuum – from those entering their peak earning years, to others selling a business, nearing retirement, and others who’ve traded their desk chair for a seat on a golf cart.
In addition to serving generations of client families, we continue to attract a “new wave” of high-net-worth women and men. These ambitious individuals include physicians, dentists, attorneys and business owners (who are selling or have sold their enterprises). Others are police, military and state workers. A growing number are recent immigrants.
While diverse in their paths to our door, clients can all benefit from our customized wealth management strategies and simple explanations of our recommendations. From investment and retirement planning, to 401k and defined benefit plans, to residential and commercial lending through Bank of America, N.A., to tax-minimization, charitable planning, legacy planning and estate planning strategies, the depth and breadth of our knowledge is reflected in the multi-pronged approach we take and the results we deliver.
Even though most clients are financially astute, a sizable number have aspects of their financial picture that have been neglected by a previous advisor. We are dedicated to earning the trust that clients place in us – typically, by providing more acumen and attention than they’ve experienced previously.
Our ability to develop long-lasting client relationships has resulted, in great part, from our mission to care for each client’s overall well-being (from financial, to health, to passions and people). We consider ourselves to be “dedicated problem solvers” and feel privileged to address complex wealth management needs that can affect clients and their extended families.
Utilizing our team members’ distinct strengths, we listen to what clients say about money and their motivations. From there, we can minimize risk while optimizing opportunity through personalized strategies we track and adjust as circumstances change. We recognize that our performance can help determine the success of our clients. This is a role we take quite seriously.
At The Lister McDonald Wealth Management Group, we focus on our clients’ lives, not just their bottom lines. Our team feels good knowing that clients have sent children to college, purchased homes, prospered in their careers, and worked tirelessly to reach these milestones. As many near retirement age, these accomplished individuals recognize the need to preserve their savings and make smart, tax-efficient decisions.
From long and frequent conversations with both spouses (whenever possible), we can help clients “see around corners” to prepare for what comes next – financially and emotionally. In discussing their families, we strive to help clients stay true to themselves and those they love. We remind clients that part of our job is helping them leave memories, as well as money – that it’s important to find joy along the path to meaningful outcomes.
As a team, we work closely with clients like a boutique – putting our heads and hearts together to assist in ways that extend beyond financial matters. Often, we’re a sounding board for a troubling health or family matter. Rather than a typical “quarterly” discussion, we talk to clients when helpful, not when the calendar tells us to.
Financially speaking, we believe in long-term planning and investing. Rather than aim for “home runs,” we use Merrill research and model portfolios to help craft each client’s portfolio with the goal of generating consistent returns from value income and dividend income. Based on a client’s financial goals, investment timeline, liquidity needs and personal preferences, a portfolio may include separately managed accounts, mutual funds, ETFs and equities.
To align our tax minimization and estate planning strategies with those of clients’ attorneys and CPAs, we can coordinate and communicate, so that optimal results can be achieved. We also work extensively with Bank of America, N.A. – providing clients with access to residential lending, refinancing, securities-based lending and commercial lending (for financing equipment and expanding their business).
Ultimately, we do our best work for clients who value our disciplined, planning-based approach. Rather than being a one-time event, this process continues over time, to address what clients envision in the near future and later, for their children and grandchildren.

• Look at ways to utilize debt wisely and enhance both sides of your balance sheet – assets and liabilities. To simplify matters, we provide ready access to specialists at Bank of America, N.A. for residential and securities-based lending, business expansion financing, as well as short- and long-term cash management.
• Work collaboratively with your CPA and attorney. Given your permission, we can align our tax minimization and estate planning strategies with theirs. To expedite matters, we are happy to coordinate meetings and our collective efforts.
